Brazilian Butt Lift Named Most Dangerous Plastic Surgery Procedure

The Brazilian butt lift involves taking fat from one part of the body, usually the stomach or the thighs, and injecting it back into the buttock after the fat has been purified. Ideally, the procedure will result in a fuller, rounder, and more lifted buttock. The grafting process is like the fat extraction process in that a cannula, or metal rod, is inserted into different areas of the buttock to distribute the fat evenly.
Health Risks of the Brazilian Butt Lift
According to the warning issued by the ASPS, nearly one in 3,000 people suffer fatal injuries during a Brazilian butt lift procedure. Patients can also experience a range of other health complications, including the following:
- Stretch marks
- Infection
- Bruising
- Blood clots
- Excessive blood loss
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Cardiac and pulmonary complications
- Fat embolism, which consists of fat traveling through the bloodstream to the lungs

The fat embolism is one of the most serious risks associated with the surgery. In fact, an article from the Miami Herald reported that, in Miami-Dade County alone, six patients have suffered fatal injuries from a fat embolism after undergoing a Brazilian butt lift. The fatalities were caused by clots of fat entering the patients’ bloodstream, where they traveled to the arteries in the lungs and heart.
